Department of Primary and Pre-primary Education

The Department of Primary and Pre-primary Education is responsible for a five-year MA degree study programme Teaching at primary schools, provided both as full-time and part-time study. Further, it is in charge of a three-year bachelor’s degree programme Teaching in pre-school education, again in both full-time and part-time form and a follow-up master degree programme Pre-school Education, which is only a part-time programme. Within lifelong education programmes, the Department offers a variety of programmes providing qualification extension. In cooperation with the Centre for Lifelong Education at the Faculty, the Department provides so-called parallel study programmes Teaching at primary schools, and Teaching in pre-school education, and a professional programme Teaching at primary schools for teachers working in lower secondary schools and a programme Teaching in pre-school education. The students of the Department are since the very beginning of their study in direct contact with children of primary school age (aged 6–11) due to their placements at schools. The students actively cooperate with schools in Olomouc region (preparing school performances, participation in events such as the Olomouc Days of Earth for children of pre-schools and primary schools, etc.). The students can choose from a wide range of optional courses connected with the major specializations that are addressing topical issues (in particular the Framework education programme and School Educational programme). The Deparment of Primary Education provides Rigorous proceedings in these accredited study fields: Teaching in pre-school education and Teaching at primary schools. The Department’s faculty comprises experienced university teachers – professors, associate professors, and doctors who carry out also scholarly research next to their teaching activities. They have been involved in various projects funded by the ESF, Higher Education Developmental Fund, and Czech Scientific Foundation. The Department organizes international conferences, cooperates with similar departments at universities both in the Czech Republic and abroad (Sweden – Uppsala, Slovakia – Bratislava, Prešov, B. Bystrica, Nitra, Poland – Opole, Ratiboř, Slovenia – Maribor, Austria – Vienna, Germany – Frankfurt a. M.). Those who are interested in school systems abroad can become members of the International Students’ Scientific Circle well established in the Department. In the process of the preparation of prospective primary school and pre-school teachers, we encourage students’ mobility and the development of their creativity by organizing teaching workshops and summer camps that are also attended by students from various countries of the world. Within the Erasmus programme, the Department cooperates with universities in Sweden (Uppsala), Poland (Czestochowa), Slovenia (Maribor) and in Slovakia (Prešov).
